History of the Community
Inman Park, Atlanta’s first suburban was planned in 1880 by Joel Hurt, an American influential estate developer and civil engineer. He acquired and developed acres of land in the east of the city of Atlanta. He had the vision to create a country-like suburban adjacent to a business district.
Joel Hurt named the new suburban for his friend and business associate Samuel Inman who was an alderman, developer, and civic leader. Johnson admired the work of Frederick Law Olmsted and held similar ideas about landscape and suburban development, including curvilinear street designs and liberal usage of open spaces.
Prominent figures started residing in this area. At that time, there was need of an access system by these prominent figures into Atlanta. Joel Hurt founded the streetcar systems to meet the transport demands of these prominent figures.
The area went into decline in the 1900’s when transportation was prominent. When the automobile became trendy, people living in the suburban began moving away to other areas where suburban areas were further developed. Mansions and elegant homes that were abandoned were divided into apartments.
This continued until the 1970’s when the area was found by urban pioneers. Inman Park restoration incorporation was formed. Dilapidated houses were renovated and restored to their former elegance and luster.
