Reynoldstown, Atlanta

History of Reynoldstown, Atlanta

Reynoldstown is a district and neighborhood located on the near east side of Atlanta, Georgia. It is located two miles from Georgia. It is a community that was discovered and developed after the American civil war. The Georgian railway located along the northern area of the settlement was a hub of employment for the freed slaves who migrated into the city in search of work after the civil war. There was a saw-mill; water supply and timber available for the migrants who wish to build their house in the area.

Reynolds town began to form in the 1860’s and by 1870 it has developed into a community and was given its present name, Reynoldstown. The neighborhood is believed to be named after Madison and Sarah Reynolds, the first ex-slaves to migrate into the area. Madison Reynolds was a prominent and successful and owner in the area who for many years operated a store on Wylie Street. Madison and his wife Sarah Reynolds had seven sons in this area. His son, Isaiah P. Reynolds, graduated from Clark College (now Clark University) and, after inheriting his father’s fortune, continued his father’s legacy in the area.

The town was annexed to the city of Atlanta in 1909. By that time there were four main streets – Wylie, Oliver (now Kenyon), Clark and Flat Shoals Avenue. Wylie and Oliver intersection was the central part of the neighborhood. Oliver Street is the major thoroughfare of the area because of its paved roads.

The neighborhood started declining during the 1950’s. This was due to the overpopulation by African-American and the railroad industry began to decline. In the 1990’s, Reynoldstown started renovation altering the demographic makeup of the neighborhood where today it is closer to a mix of 65% white and 35% African-American population composition.
